This accomplishment was made possible by the support of many people, but mentioning them all would make this section longer. This thesis is among the products of the Client Oriented Research COR ; Program Lake Zone, Tanzania, which was jointly funded by the Governments of Tanzania and The Netherlands Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation DGIS . Funding from Dr. J.A. Zwartz foundation facilitated the printing of the thesis. As I accomplish this exciting experience, I sincerely express my gratitude to these institutions for financial support. I in particular grateful to Professor Ken E. Giller, my promoter, who has made huge contributions at various stages of my study. After having secured a place at Imperial College at Wye to pursue my PhD, Ken asked me to join him at the University of Zimbabwe, where he spent his time teaching me theories and practices of science. It was in the last week of my three months stay in Zimbabwe, when Ken disclosed, he had a new job at Wageningen University. When I was most discouraged and challenged of parting at such an early stage, he promised to bring me to Wageningen. Through his efforts, switching between the universities was made possible. At Wageningen, his motivation and advice was endless. Ken, I feel privileged to work with you. Many thanks to Dr. Nico de Ridder, my co-promotor, who together with Prof. Herman van Keulen in collaboration with Prof. Ken Giller, facilitated my admission to Wageningen University. I thank Nico for the motivation and advice during the visit to my experimental trials in Bukoba, and for everyday guidance, excellent suggestions and constructive critics in multi-objective modelling. We had long hours of intensive work; thanks for the meals and drinks we had together, which helped to ease the pressure especially when this thesis was to be submitted. Nico, it is through your support that the objectives of this project have been fulfilled. The idea of undertaking this project started during one of the workshops on integrated soil fertility management with farmers in Kiilima village. A promise of funds was all the encouragement I needed to start this project. I would like to thank Dr. Joel Kabissa, Mr. Peter Kapingu, Mr. Jackson Nkuba, Mr. Willem Heemskerk, Mr. Ted Schrader, Dr. Bart de Steenhuijsen Piters and Mrs. Chira Schouten, who all managed at different capacities my project under the COR grant and fennel.

11.6 Egypt: Ships in the Desert Snaking its way through the desert between Port Said on the Mediterranean and Suez on the Red Sea, the Suez Canal is not so much a watery line in the sand but one of the main arteries of the Egyptian economy. If recent developments are anything to go by, the flow of financial lifeblood into the economy is set to increase. At the end of 2006, Admiral Ahmed Aly Fadel, the chairman of the Suez Canal Authority which operates the strategic waterway, announced record earnings for the year past, with the canal bringing in .8b, well up on the .4b of 2005. During 2006, more than 18, 500 vessels with a combined tonnage of 736.8m transited the 163km waterway, another record and some 400 up on the previous year, Fadel told a news conference in Port Said on December 28. According to shipping experts, much of this increase in traffic can be attributed to the growth in trade between Asia - in particular, China and India - and European markets. The importance of the canal to the economy cannot be overestimated. While oil, gas or textiles may be the products that come to mind when thinking of Egypt's main foreign currency earners, it is in fact the transit and pilotage fees generated by the canal that top them all, with only remittances from Egyptian workers employed overseas and tourism ahead of it on the list of money spinners. However, despite the increasing returns from the canal, Egypt is not about to rest on its laurels. Since being opened in 1869, a series of projects have seen the canal become deeper and wider so that it now has the capacity to take ships of up to 210, 000 tons. The latest scheme is to further deepen the canal from its present 19 meters to 22 meters by 2010. This would allow 82% of the world's tanker fleet, and 99% of all other ships, to make use of the canal. It is not just by maximizing the capacity of the canal that Egypt hopes to increase revenues. Quite apart from a new fee regime set to be implemented after April this year, which will see an average 2.84% rise in tariffs, with tankers hit with a 3.73% increase, Cairo is also looking to lock in trade deals with Asia that will boost traffic and income. One such agreement, which is in the final stages of negotiation between Egypt, China and Italy, will see almost all of China's maritime trade with Europe pass through the Suez Canal. Currently, some 14% of the waterway's traffic carries Chinese cargoes, representing 60% of China's shipments to Europe. Under the agreement, vessels carrying cargoes from China will pass through the Suez Canal and be landed at the Italian port of Gioia Tauro in Sicily. According to Galal alDeeb, a senior advisor to Admiral Fadel, the accord would represent a major advance for Egypt. "The agreement will increase ship movement through the Canal as the port receives nearly 60% of total Chinese shipments to Europe, " he said. While the Suez Canal Authority had no plans to cut tariffs for Chinese ships, Al-Deeb said the Ministry of Finance may provide incentives to encourage trade movement. This confirmed a statement by Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid prior to the signing of the accord that China would receive special tariffs for cargoes carried through the canal. Though the Suez Canal is undergoing many changes in regard to its dimensions and level of usage, it appears one thing will not change - its status as a national asset. While the government of Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif is stepping up its privatization campaign and opening up of the economy to investors, with the state even loosening its grip on the once sacrosanct oil sector, the canal seems to be out of bounds. Nationalized in 1956 by then President Gamal Abdel Nasser, a move that sparked the Suez Crisis and war with England, France and Israel, the canal has become a symbol of Egyptian independence. When a partial sell off of the canal was mooted in 2004, President Hosni Mubarak himself made it clear that the subject was taboo. OBG24.01.

The level of the cells and tissues that synthesize them 57 ; . This group of enzymes, showing broad substrate specificity, is localized in the endoplasmic reticulum of various cell types, including hepatocytes and pneumocytes. Co-localization of CYP2A5 and AOH3 in the same cells within the olfactory mucosa suggests that the two enzymes have similar functions or participate in the same metabolic pathway. Toward a Definition of the Phylogeny of the Molybdo-flavoenzyme Genes--Molecular cloning of the cDNAs coding for mouse AOH3 and the rat orthologues of AOH3, AOH2, and AOH1 permitted the definition of the complete structure and organization of the corresponding genes. The mouse Aoh3 gene shows remarkable conservation of the exon intron organization relative to Xor and all members of the aldehyde oxidase gene cluster. Similarly, the exon intron structure of rat Aoh3, Aoh2, and Aoh1 is superimposable on that of Aox1, supporting the notion that all these genes originated from one or more duplication events. This last finding demonstrates that the existence of gene duplications coding for mammalian molybdo-flavoenzymes endowed with aldehyde oxidase activity is not a peculiarity of the mouse. The mouse Aoh3 genes map to the same chromosomal region chromosome 1 band c1 ; 15 ; and are transcribed in the same orientation as Aox1, Aoh1, and Aoh2. Analogously, a short section of rat chromosome 9q31 contains all the rat orthologues. In both animal species, the Xor gene orthologues reside on a different chromosome, chromosome 17 in mouse and chromosome 6 in rat. This is consistent with a more ancient origin of this last molybdo-flavoenzyme, which, unlike aldehyde oxidases, can be traced back to bacteria 1, 4, 5 ; . The rodent complement of molybdo-flavoenzymes is very similar to that of certain types of insects and plants 1 ; . In fact, Drosophila melanogaster and Arabidopsis thaliana contain at least four forms of molybdo-flavoenzymes showing significant amino acid identity to AOX1, AOH1, AOH2, and AOH3. These proteins can be catalogued as aldehyde oxidases on the basis of various criteria 1 ; . As mice and rats, they are coded for by separate genes, whose structures suggest an origin common with the corresponding Xor gene through a series of duplication events 1 ; . Despite these similarities, the duplications leading to the appearance of plant, insect, and rodent molybdo-flavoenzyme genes are distinct and must have taken place independently 1 ; . In fact, the exon intron structure of insect and plant aldehyde oxidase genes is much less complicated and quite different from that of mammalian aldehyde oxidase genes. This contrasts with the high level of amino acid identity among the five mammalian molybdo-flavoproteins and the perfect conservation of the exon intron organization of the corresponding genes, suggesting that mouse and rat AOX1, AOH1, AOH2, and AOH3 arose relatively recently during evolution. The recent release of the first draft of the dog and chicken genomes gives us an opportunity to take a look at the situation of the molybdo-flavoenzyme genes in two other higher vertebrates. The dog genome shows evidence of five potential genes coding for molybdo-flavoenzymes. All of these genes are characterized by remarkable sequence similarity to Xor, Aox1, Aoh1, Aoh2, and Aoh3. The first one maps to chromosome 17 and is characterized by sequence features that are consistent with the idea that the gene codes for the Xor orthologue NCBI accession number AAEX01043817 ; . The other four genes are localized very close to one another on chromosome 37 and present with the characteristics of the rat aldehyde oxidase genes accession numbers AAEX01054799, AAEX01054803, AAEX01054804, and AAEX01054805 ; . Strikingly, the exon intron junctions of the five genes can be predicted precisely on the basis of the exon limits of the mouse and rat molybdo and fenoprofen.

In an article e-published on May 22 ahead of print in the British Journal of Cancer, El-Emir et al. from the Royal Free and University College Medical School London, UK ; reported on characterization of and experimental radiotherapy with human monoclonal antibody L19-SIP, an antiangiogenic antibody against the extra domain B of fibronectin in colorectal tumor models. The L19-SIP antibody targets the extra domain B of fibronectin, a marker of angiogenesis expressed in colorectal tumors. The authors reported on localization and retention of the antibody in 2 different types of xenografts. The antibody was labeled with 125I to assess whole-body distribution in both tumor models. Based on positive results in localization, retention, and confirmation of extra domain B expression in tumor vasculature, the authors performed an in vivo radioimmunotherapy study with the 131Ilabeled antibody in a mouse xenograft model. Selective tumor uptake, tumor growth inhibition, and improved survival were demonstrated. The authors concluded that ``131I-L19-SIP shows potential as a novel treatment of colorectal tumors and provides the foundation to investigate combined therapies in the same tumor models.''
