Pneumocystis carinll pneumonia is the most common opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS; it occurs in approximately 75% of cases [1 1. Extrapulmonary P carinii infection, previously considered rare, is being recognized increasingly [2]. We report three cases of tumefactive P cariflii infection, encountered during a recent 3-month period, manifested radiologically as focal mass lesions within hilar lymph nodes, in the pleural space on lung apex, and in the psoas muscle.

At 50 min, 100 nM epinephrine was stirred into the apical bath. This caused an immediate increase in Jv that reached a new steady-state level of 3 fil cm2 hr in 30 min. TEP increased from 5 to 9 mV, transiently decreased and then remained elevated, and Rt decreased ! 20 ft cm2. At 120 min, 0.1 mM bumetanide was stirred into the apical bath. It reduced Jv from 3.0 to 0.5 il cm2-hr and TEP from 7 to 2 within 30 min. In the absence of epinephrine, bumetanide produced a significantly smaller decrease in Jv and TEP. We report on a four-month-old child with pneumonia caused by the fungus Acremonium kiliense as the first clinical manifestation of chronic granulomatous disease. We emphasize the importance of an active search for unusual organisms in immunodeficient patients, and a precise diagnosis and early institution of specific treatment against such microorganisms for the reduction of the morbidity and mortality of these patients. SUMMARY The potential of essential oils EO ; in animal nutrition is discussed with some selected examples obtained with the blends produced by CRINA SA. Synergistic effects of EO on endogenous enzyme production and on microbial flora are used to increase animal performances. In ruminants, blends can be created that significantly reduce rumen ammonia production and increase protein by-pass. In monogastrics, the effect on the colonisation of the guts by different bacteria Clostridium perfringens in poultry and haemolytic E. coli in pigs ; will be shown. The effects on feed efficiency and daily weight gain in pigs are shown as a model for the expected effects on animal performances. Key words: Essential oils, pigs, poultry, ruminants.

In a recent study of ion transport heterogeneity in the lightest SS RBCs, we discovered a rapid turnover RTO ; K 86Rb ; pool in a small subpopulation, with the distinctive property that its OR 86Rb influx component was inhibited by high concentrations 1 mM ; of bumetanide 5 ; . To test whether the high pump-leak cal-res RBCs might coincide with that bumetanide-sensitive RTO K pool, we compared the effect of bumetanide on the OR 86Rb influx in cal-res and non-cal-res RBCs. We found Fig. 4C ; that bumetanide inhibited that flux only in the cal-res RBCs, and had no effect on the 86Rb influx into the reticulocyte-rich, non-cal-res RBCs. Thus, the cal-res fraction may be identical to the RTO K pool, and part of the high passive K permeability of cal-res RBCs may include a permeation pathway distinct from that in other RBCs, in its sensitivity to high levels of bumetanide.

Hyponatraemia, hypochloraemia and raised blood urea may occur or hyperuricaemia, which may precipitate acute attacks of gout. Patients with prostatic hypertrophy or impaired micturition may develop acute retention. The requirement for hypoglycaemic agents may be increased and latent diabetes may become manifest. Serum lithium levels may increase with concomitant lithium therapy. Since ACE inhibitors may elevate serum potassium, use with Burinex A is best avoided, especially in the elderly or in renal impairment. Nephrotoxicity of cephalosporin and aminoglycoside antibiotics may be enhanced. Cardiac glycosides or antihypertensive agents may require dose adjustment Safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. A high degree of conservation of this protein during evolution. Our results of polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic analysis of the distribution of vimentin among different species are in good agreement with those of previous investigations employing indirect immunofluorescence microscopy and also biochemical analysis for references, see the Introduction ; . In this study, vimentin was characterized not only by its constant physicochemical behaviour during extraction, NH zSCU precipitation and gel electrophoresis, but also by its potential to give rise to a characteristic and constant set of polypeptides in response to degradation by the specific, Ca2 + -activated proteinase. Irrespective of the evolutionary distance between the various species, Figs 1-4 show constant patterns of satellite bands of vimentin, although the degradation products are quantitatively differentially represented. The reason for this variability is unknown; it might be due to the presence of different activators or inhibitors of the Ca2 + -activated proteinase in different cell lines or to slight differences in the handling of the cells during their harvesting and extraction. Since the supplementation of the wash and extraction buffers with EGTA and proteinase inhibitors led to a considerable, in some cases even total, suppression of the formation of breakdown products, these polypeptides must be regarded as artefacts of isolation. From this we conclude that in vivo the major part of vimentin is somehow protected from proteolytic degradation and that, if the Ca2 + -activated proteinase found to be specific for intermediate filament proteins has a genuine function in the processing of vimentin, only a small number of vimentin molecules are degraded, probably at very distinct locations within the cell. However, not only vimentin but also the Ca2 + -activated proteinase is conserved during evolution, as published recently Nelson & Traub, 1982a; Traub & Nelson, 1981 ; . This high degree of evolutionary stability points to an important cellular function for the vimentin-proteinase system that is still a matter of conjecture. Among the 63 different cell lines examined, we found only two that did not express vimentin: MPC-11 mouse myeloma and M0PC-31C mouse plasmacytoma cells. Even after cautious harvesting of the cells in the presence of EGTA and proteinase inhibitors, their extraction under proteinase-inhibitory conditions and the employment of the sensitive immunoblotting assay or-IFA ; , the nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions of both cell lines turned out to be totally devoid of vimentin and other intermediate filament proteins Fig. 5 ; . This result is in agreement with our previous failure to detect vimentin-specific mRNA in the poly A ; + mRNA populations of logarithmically growing MPC-11 and MOPC-31C cells McTavish, Nelson & Traub, 1983 ; . Correspondingly, the activity of the Ca2 + -activated proteinase specific for intermediate filament proteins from these cells was found to be, at the most, 20 % of that in Ehrlich ascites tumour cells our unpublished results ; . The complete absence of vimentin from MPC-11 and MOPC-31C cells shows that vimentin expression is neither a prerequisite for nor necessarily indicative of rapid cell proliferation as suggested previously Frankee * al. 1979; Pauline al. 1982; Virtanenef a . 1981a ; , but was then questioned when rapidly proliferating MHiCi hepatoma cells were found not to synthesize vimentin Frankee a . 1981 ; . It cannot be excluded, however, that cell lines that do not accumulate vimentin in amounts detectable by conventional and campral.
