Caulophyllum Syr. Zingiber q. s. oz. iv " Euonymous aa. dr. i Syr. Zingiberis q. s. oz. iv These are good compounds for dysmenorrhoea. With Aralia and Prunus it influences the bronchi and may be added to the cough syrups of the chlorotic. It is soothing, cleansing and strengthening to the lungs. SENECIO MARITIMUS. Cineraria Maritima. A juice obtained from this agent is recently praised very highly in cases of cataract. It is claimed that its application in one or two drop doses daily will eventually remove cataract. It is very stimulating to the eye, creating a severe burning sensation for a short time. From reports we judge that it is either an uncertain agent or that it is adapted only to a peculiar class of eyes affected with cataract. SIERRA SALVIA. Mountain Sage, Sage-Brush. Artemisia Frigida. ; Western U. S. This herb is a bitter aromatic, diffusive, stimulating diaphoretic, and is also antiperiodic, alterant and nervine. Large doses nauseate and may produce vomiting. In hot infusion it influences the circulation, inducing a good outward flow of blood and free diaphoresis. It stimulates the entire peripheral circulation and sustains the heart and arteries. It quite thoroughly influences all the secernents and the mucous membrane, the liver, the gall ducts, the kidneys and the bowels. It gives excellent results in mountain fever, spinal irritation, meningitis; intermittent, remittent, congestive and rheumatic fevers; pleuritis, pneumonitis, sciatica, la grippe, scarletina and the other exanthemata. Also in muco-purulent leucorrhoea, in phthisis, and in amenorrhoea and dysmenorrhoea when the results of congestion. SILPHIUM LACINIATUM. Rosin Weed. The leaves contain a resinous material, a rather bitter stimulant to the mucous membrane. It lessens expectoration, and lessens the alvine discharges in dysentery and diarrhoea. It is also beneficial in intermittent fevers. SILPHIUM PERFOLIATUM. Cup Moss. The root and leaves are a diffusive stimulant, influencing the liver, gall ducts and spleen, and is laxative to the bowels. A decoction sweetened with honey is an excellent expectorant for children's coughs and whooping cough. In hot infusion it is a gentle diaphoretic and useful in cases of biliousness, colds, remittent and catarrhal fevers. It is said also to be an antiperiodic. SIMABA CEDRON. Cedron Seed. New Grenada This tree grows to the height of about 15 feet. The stem when about twelve feet, ends in a terminal panicle of flowers covered externally with brownish hairs. It then sends forth side branches which do the same. The fruit is about the size of a large peach and covered with short hairs. Each fruit contains one seed having two halves. The intensely bitter seed is a stimulating and relaxing antispasmodic nervine. By those among whom the tree grows, it is successfully used in the cure of rattlesnake bite and that of other poisonous reptiles and insects, also in the cure of hydrophobia. It is used internally and applied to the surface of the wound, and in hydrophobia it is also used hypodermically.
Single SCLC Tumor Without Evidence of Spread Most experts recommend a mediastinoscopy for people with limited stage SCLC who have a single tumor and no evidence of spread on their initial staging workup. A mediastinoscopy is a surgical procedure in which a rigid instrument called an endoscope is inserted through a small incision at the base of the neck or near the breastbone into the central area of chest called the mediastinum. The mediastinum contains the heart and the large blood vessels entering and leaving it, the trachea, the esophagus, and the mediastinal lymph nodes. A mediastinoscopy is performed to examine the mediastinal structures and take tissue samples from local lymph nodes. Lymph node samples are examined under a microscope to determine if there are lung cancer cells present. Mediastinoscopy is performed under general anesthesia and usually requires an overnight hospital stay.
PREDATORS ON PINNIPEDS Suspected predators of these pinnipeds are sharks of several species and killer whales. Rice 1968 ; listed the remains of California sea lions, northern sea lions, and northern elephant seals from the stomachs of killer whales, Orcinus orca. Kenyon 1959 ; identified the remains of California sea lions from the stomach of a white shark. Carcharodon carcharias. DISCUSSION Comparatively little is known about pinniped movements and feeding habits at sea, with the exception of the northern fur seal. We can, however, make some generalizations about feeding activites and foraging strategies of these six species by using available data. In California waters, the schooling fishes and squid Pacific hake, northern anchovy, jack mackerel, and the squid Loligo ; are all commonly preyed on by otariids. We can assume that epipelagic and mesopelagic foraging is usual among otariids from what is known about the movement of these species both in coastal and offshore waters. Feeding in the epipelagic and mesopelagic zones is particularly true for the wintering northern fur seal when it arrives in California waters in December from the northern rookeries ; until it departs again in spring Fiscus and Kajimura 1967, 1969 ; . The northern fur seal is the most pelagic of the four otariid species and seldom approaches land, whereas the two sea lion species do feed in the nearshore areas and to.
During the first years after its discovery, LSD brought me the same happiness and gratification that any pharmaceutical chemist would feel on learning that a substance he or she produced might possibly develop into a valuable medicament. For the creation of new remedies is the goal of a pharmaceutical chemist's research activity; therein lies the meaning of his or her work.
In the Inorganics division, sales to third parties in 2000 rose 15.3% to 0626 million from 0543 million in 1999. During the course of the year, BASF increased the price of its products in this division in order to pass on the higher cost of natural gas. Despite an increase in sales, income from operations in 2000 was lower than in 1999, as the Inorganics division could not increase prices for its products to the same extent to which the cost of raw materials increased. At the end of 2000, BASF started up the world's largest formaldehyde plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, with a production capacity of 180, 000 metric tons per year. For 2001, BASF expects sales in the Inorganics division to remain strong, with income from operations increasing slightly due primarily to strong growth in demand for inorganic specialties and electronic grade chemicals. Intermediates In the Intermediates division, sales to third parties in 2000 increased 16.8% to 01, 720 million from 01, 472 million in 1999. This increase was due to higher sales volumes in the division's major product areas. The effect of falling prices on sales was more than offset by positive currency effects of approximately 9%. Income from operations in the Intermediates division declined in 2000 due to sharp increases in raw material costs. The division could not fully pass these higher costs on to customers through higher prices for its products, partly because existing sales contracts had not yet expired. Capital expenditures rose in 2000, primarily due to the expansion of existing plants in Ludwigshafen, Germany; Geismar, Louisiana and Ulsan, Korea. Given rising demand for BASF's products, which BASF expects to meet through the startup of several new plants by the end of 2002, as well as higher selling prices, BASF expects that the Intermediates division will improve income from operations in 2001. Subject to approval by the European regulatory authorities, BASF will acquire the butanediol, phthalic anhydride and plasticizers activities of the SISAS Group in Feluy, Belgium. BASF expects the costs of the integration to result in special charges in 2001. Specialty Chemicals In the Specialty Chemicals division, sales to third parties in 2000 rose 18.5% to 01, 670 million from 01, 409 million in 1999, primarily due to higher sales volumes and to positive currency effects of approximately 8%. Improved prices in particular for surfactants, chelates, and polymeric additives also contributed to the sales increase. Increases in raw material costs in particular for ethylene and propylene could only be passed on in higher prices to customers to a limited extent and after a period of delay. As a result, income from operations fell. In the market for glycols, operations providing additional production capacity are scheduled to start up, which will maintain downward price pressure. Nevertheless, BASF expects that in 2001 on a comparable basis, the Specialty Chemicals division will make an improved contribution to the Chemicals segment's income from operations due to higher sales. 1999 Compared with 1998 Segment Overview In mid 2000 the former Petrochemicals & Inorganics and the Industrial Chemicals divisions were reorganized into the Inorganics and the Petrochemicals division. As part of this reorganization, technical nitrogen products were transferred from Others the former Fertilizers division ; to the Inorganics division. The segment reporting for 1999 and 1998 reflects this reorganization. 115.
